Hello J.,
I am currently finishing my masters degree in military history from Norwich University. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog. I grew up in the 60′s and 70′s on a steady diet of war movies and I found your observations of Hollywood right on the mark. When I get into historical discussions with friends and co-workers I am constantly disturbed by the fact that most peoples’ knowledge of history, especially military history, is based on Hollywood. God help us all!
Yeah, I don’t always object to Hollywood. I mean, at least it provides some kind of awareness of the topic. Just don’t make my job any harder than it is!
I found the article on medieval armour quite by chance, and all in all I think it was an excellent read. I have one correction to offer though. There’s a distinction between the aketon and the gambeson: the former is usually used to refer to the foundation garment and the latter is usually a standalone defense or one that is worn over mail.

Thanks! I’ll go change that.
Glad to help.
I’m a non-academic lover of history and accidentally discovered your blog. Serendipity strikes.
I do have to warn you I intend to put a lot more non-history stuff on here.
